Cottam Power Station

Protection Testing

Overview:

Z-Tech was commissioned to conduct protection testing of Cottam Power Station’s fleet devices, providing injection testing, and setting review and compliance data for the station engineers.

Historically the staff at Cottam Power Station had conducted this activity but, due to increasing demands on the station, Z-Tech removed the relays from site, conducted the testing and returned with verification documentation.

Challenges:

  • Minimal historical documentation
  • No database of devices
  • Lack of information
  • Sourcing spare parts.

Key solutions:

  • During the process of testing, Z-Tech introduced QR coding and set up a database which was web based for easy access. Z-Tech provided a disaster recovery plan and trained the onsite C&I Technicians for day-to-day maintenance and emergency procedures.
  • All devices where tested to the station protection requirements.
  • Providing an online database reduced the need to gather large paper documentation files and will ensure easy access for future requirements.

Key benefits:

Cottam Power Station now has:

  • A reliable resource to support future requirements
  • An up-to-date, easy to access database.

Services:

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Electrical
  • Software

"Z-Tech was able to demonstrate its excellent knowledge of protection testing during this project, linking with our software team to introduce robust QR barcoding." Martin Coake, Maintenance Business Manager

"The customer focus and flexibility of Z-Tech makes it easy for a water utility to deal with. When we have a large and complex programme to deliver, planning every detail can be a challenge. Working with Z-Tech means that we can maintain delivery, knowing that resources are available to pick up the loose ends."
