Hogsmill Aeration Process

Hogsmill Sewage Treatment Works called Z-Tech in when problems with their aeration system were disrupting the handling of sludge for disposal, making it difficult to meet evertightening consent levels. This was an on-going problem that had taxed the best brains in the business for three years.

Z-Tech delivered a new, specially designed controller that allowed the system to achieve the sought-after levels of aeration, eliminating the problem. This solution was built into existing control infrastructure, without affecting either the operator interface or the process control. Following an observation and development period of several weeks, the specially designed controller was installed in a day. The aeration process was then intensively monitored for several weeks. Routine monitoring continues, reflecting seasonal fluctuations in the plant's workload.

The result is that dissolved oxygen levels are now effectively controlled and Hogsmill now operates comfortably within its new, tighter consent levels. The cost to the client was kept low throughout, with all costs recouped within six months on energy saving alone. The new system has also shown itself to be reliable and the number of call-outs to the site has reduced.
