Sir Bani Yas Island

Sir Bani Yas is a natural island located 160 miles southwest of Abu Dhabi. The island is being developed with respect for nature and a delicate ecosystem. The region's first wind turbine is located there and there are plans to produce power from solar energy.

Hot Tapping

One of the greatest challenges facing the island is the availability of clean water for human use, wildlife, livestock and irrigation. Currently, clean water is pumped from the mainland via two underwater pipelines with strategic metering points across the island to monitor usage. The majority of these metering points were installed on the island network easily via planned shutdowns and network management; however six points were not able to be shut as they formed the main feeds to the island and its service reservoirs. For these points insertion probes were selected as they would not cause an interruption to the supply.

Z-Tech were contracted to perform the six under pressure tappings for the installation of the flow meters. Of the six quadrinas to be installed four were straight forward and completed quickly as the pipe had an average thickness of 10mm. However, the older 500mm main was wrapped in a protective reinforced concrete coating 25mm thick, had a pipe thickness of 20mm followed by a further 15mm of reinforced concrete on the liner. After 12 broken holesaws and 1 broken drilling shaft the project was successfully completed. TDIC are now able to monitor the flow leaving the mainland and arriving on the island - a vital part of their developing leakage strategy.
