Scottish Water Case Study

Scottish Water has an on-going commitment to improving the quality of reported data to the regulator and to using improved data to identify and reduce leakage. Scottish Water commissioned Z-Tech to work at over 300 sites with 500 meters across Scotland (including islands).

Z-Tech was called in to:

Survey current flow monitoring systems and recommend changes, including the replacement and installation of new meters, automated logging systems and data validation processes
Create a baseline for recording data against which further improvements could be measured
Establish an auditable process for the automation of data collection
Liaise with stakeholders within the business to ensure internal confidence in data reporting processes and identify opportunities for further cost savings and data improvements
Develop an in-house data validation and reporting system providing key data for the reported water balance
Support changes in reporting structure to reflect organisational change within the business

Scottish Water has very demanding internal and regulator targets and access to good quality data is key to meeting these. Since Z-Tech implemented this package of measures, the company has consistently reported an improved score on confidence and uncertainty, which has been accepted by the regulator (Water Industry Commissioner).

Scottish Water has also made substantial improvement in prevention of leakage. Whilst Z-Tech's remit was not to reduce leakage, we have provided a system for reliable data reporting to help consolidate these improvements and the reporting process is currently operating at a substantially reduced cost.
