Optimising Specialist Ink-Coating Machine

CLIENT COLUMBIA INTERNATIONAL
PROJECT OPTIMISING SPECIALIST INK-COATING MACHINE
Process: Columbia’s special Halley machine produced specialist ink ribbons by laying ink on a clear membrane. Four layers were required, with a drying cycle between each stage.

Problem: Inconsistencies in the manually controlled drying stages were leading to unstable results, with quality of the finished product being unsatisfactorily variable.

Solution: Z-Tech designed an individual automated temperature control system, featuring highly accurate sensors to monitor the temperature and humidity within the various zones of the machine, coupled with the existing heating system to deliver consistent drying conditions.

Timescale: Ten days.

Result: Consistent drying conditions led to a consistent output well within quality control limits.

Benefit: Reduced wastage saved cost while improved quality. Consistent quality opened new markets to the company.
