Hogsmill Aeration Process

CLIENT THAMES WATER UTLITIES
PROJECT HOGSMILL AERATION PROCESS
Process and problem: Sludge needed to be correctly handled for disposal but the levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the aeration were resisting control, making it difficult to meet ever-tightening consent levels. This was an ongoing problem that had taxed the best brains in the business for three years.

Solution: Z-Tech delivered a new, specially designed controller that allowed the system to achieve the sought-after levels of aeration, eliminating the DO problem. This solution was built into existing control infrastructure, without affecting either the operator interface or the process control.

Timescale: Three months/ongoing – following an observation and development period of several weeks, the specially designed controller was installed in a day. The aeration process was then intensively monitored for several weeks. Routine monitoring continues, reflecting seasonal fluctuations in the plant’s workload.

Result: Dissolved oxygen levels are now effectively controlled.

Benefit: Hogsmill now operates comfortably within its new, tighter consent levels. Cost to the client was kept low throughout, with all costs recouped within six months on energy saving alone . The new system has also shown itself to be more reliable and the number of call-outs to the site has reduced.
