PROJECT BEDDINGTON AUTOMATION
Process and Problem: Beddington is a large Sewage Treatment Works to the South of London, serving an area with a population exceeding 700,000. It was the last sewage treatment works in London to be fully automated. To reduce manpower and improve process quality, it was decided to automate the sludge stream and combine this control with other control and monitoring elements on the site.

Solution: Z-Tech installed a SCADA system based on ICONICS Genesis32 using OPC servers to communicate with Allen Bradley SLC500s and a number of MODBUS devices, including Eurotherm dataloggers and RDT radio modems. At a lower level, new Profibus networks were installed to enable new valve actuators and instrumentation in the raw sludge process area. Existing automated digester valves were used to complete the automation of the sludge stream.

Result: All key process areas were added to the site’s SCADA system and the sludge stream was automated from primary treatment to lagoons.

Benefit: Process improvements were demonstrated in terms of reduced sludge to land and increased gas production while operational manpower costs were also reduced.

"Z-Tech's level of technical expertise and customer focus has been used on a varied scale from small on site projects and large scale area improvements. All have been delivered to time, scope and budget. A rare accolade in todays market place."
